| Cwmtillery
went into this Welsh Cup first round tie against Gwent League rivals Abertyswg
with many of they regular first choice players missing through injury or
unavailability and were thankful for the help of former players Paul Banks,
Sean Bull and Paul Jones who all came out of retirement to get the game on the
park. Cwmtillery met the experienced Aber pack face on and took an early lead when again scrum half, Mark Staley broke from a ruck close to the visitor line and went over under the post which fullback Liam Beattie converted. Aber replied with a try and conversion of there own resulting from a strong drive from they pack and went further ahead with a well taken penalty. Cwmtillery responded to the challenge making ground with they strong lineout work and resulting drives to put Sean Bull over for a well deserved try. Indiscipline started to creep into the Cwmtillery side and Aber kicked they next penalty to take the scores to 12-10 to the home side only for Aber to snatch the lead with a try and conversion with the last move of the first half HT 12 - 17 Aber started off the second half with confidence with they experienced scrum half Martin Burridge keeping they pack going forward with deep kicks into the Cwmtillery half. Aber stretched they lead further with a penalty inside the home 22. Cwmtillery now needed two scores and threw everything at the visitors, they only reward being another penalty from Beattie (15 -20). With time running out Cwmtillery tried to run the ball only for the move to break down and with the backs tied up, Aber turned the ball over and fed their wing who raced over under the posts for 60m. FT 15 - 27 Off the field, Cwmtillery have started to make links with Abertillery Comprehensive school by holding coaching sessions after school with the hope of getting rugby played there on a regular basis. The first session was held last week with the Year 7 children and was well attended by 18 enthusiastic kids. The sessions will take place now every Wednesday after school and all children are welcome to turn up and lets hope we can get rugby played back into the town the level it was a few years ago |
