February 2007

Didn't the weather forecaster get it wrong.
Thursday it should have been 6cm of snow and it arrived bang on time, Friday no snow just rain, yes in there dreams. I left very early in the morning to people waiting on the side of the road in a blizzard, waiting for their coach to take them to Scotland to watch the Rugby international.
Friday it started snow early and it didn't stop until early evening, leaving a massive 23cm of snow on the ground. The valley came to a stop, most working people made an early start home from work and hit traffic jams everywhere. Normal 30 minutes journeys were taken up to 3 to 4 hours, the roads were a nightmare. With no traffic moving in the valley it was drive until you stop and leave the vehicle there until better condition arrived.
As quick as it came, a thaw started on the Saturday followed be light rain, at least this will allow people to get out recovery some of their cars and get the shopping in. More snow forecasted for today (Saturday) but its not arrived yet, "O" by the way I was a council grittier this morning, pity because most of the main roads are clear now! Photos taken...

Well that's what's on the cards, but its not the end of the club. I understand that the club will be leased back to the members for a "£X" monthly amount. Minor building work and plans for outdoor sitting/playing area are also planned. Bags of entertainment will hopefully be planned. With this, the only watering hole north of the Bridgend Pub it would be a shame to see it close.

Jack Witchard,

Appeal and thanks from mother Paula...Here is the latest update on our son Jack. He is 11 months old now. We have some good news for you his latest test results were very good, so The Bonemarrow Transplant is still not needed at the moment. However he is still on Chemotherapy once every fortnight. This is called Maintenance Chemotherapy. He will be observed very closely during the course of this treatment. The intention is to gain control of the disease until hopefully it burns itself out. This however does not always happen. We hope and pray that it does in Jack's case. Although we have had good news we still take one day at a time. This disease is very mysterious and unpredictable so we are afraid to get too excited. Its like being on an emotional rollercoaster one minute we are high and the next minute we are low. His bonemarrow will be rechecked again in about 4 months so we hope and pray that by then it will be clear of disease, and if not clear hopefully no worse than it is now and The Bonemarrow Transplant will still not be needed. My husband Paul is doing a free fall abseil from Newport Transporter Bridge on Sunday 6th July to raise funds for The Anthony Nolan Trust. It costs The Anthony Nolan Trust £50 for each new person that they add onto The Bonemarrow Register. My sister Alison Preece will be trying to raise as much sponsorship on behalf of my husband Paul within our local community. Thank you very much for your support.
Best Regards, Paula Witchard.

Improvement Scheme for Lakes Area.

The Cwmtillery Lakes and Countryside area will soon have more than 450 metres of hard surface laid around the area and further planting of trees. The footpath around the lakes, which was only half completed 2 years ago, will now be finished off as part of the improvement plan. Also improvements to the drainage system which will remove the surplus water which holds on the pathways.
A quote from the Executive member for leisure services, councillor Nigel Daniels "Cwmtillery Lakes and Countryside Park is one of the most picturesque spots in Blaenau Gwent and we must ensure that a visit there is a pleasurable experience for both residents and visitors to the area"
Work will hopefully be completed by late Spring ensuring that all of the park is accessible for the summer months.
Future development for a car park are planned but not yet dated. Watch this space for updates and photos.

Tillery Court! Gone

11th Feb and the JCB's moved in to demolish the long standing Tillery Court. The Court has served the community well as a care centre/dance hall for the disabled, for well over 30 years. But the end was not as straight forward as it was suppose to be.
By the end of the day over half of Tillery Court had be brought to the ground by the JCB's.
Yet as if to follow the same fate as Cock and Chick school did, by early evening the remainder of the Court was ablaze and the black smoke covered the lower end of the valley. Fire engines from all around the area attended, and soon had the blaze under control. The fire was so intense that flame were still visible the following morning.
Tillery Court is making way for the new Sports Complex, See November 2002 below.

November 2002
The new proposed Sports Complex, will hopefully be started in the next few weeks. The 3.5m sports centre cost, will be funded by "Sportslot" (1.5m) and the balance will be made up from the council,s capital expenditure programme and social services.
It will be built on land adjacent to the Abertillery Comprehensive school, and is expected to be completed by 2004.
Then complete it will provide sport, leisure, art, entertainment, education, health and social care, all in the same complex. It will have a 5 lane 25m swimming pool, learners pool, sports hall with courts for badminton, volleyball, basketball and squash. The new day care centre, which will be at ground level, will have a dedicated reception area to ensure it will retain its individual identity.
As the builder move in I'll start to collect a few photos showing progress.

Expansion at Tillery Valley Foods
Around 100 new jobs could be created thanks to a £5m expansion at Tillery Valley Foods The expansion started in February this year and will almost double the area of the site. The recently announced expansion also safeguards the 350 strong workforce presently employed there. Blaenau Gwent AM Peter Law welcomed the news by saying, " I am delighted to congratulate the company and its workforce on this further good news of expansion within our community. This will eventually lead to further employment opportunities in our area where there are so many people who are waiting to have the opportunity to find work.

This recent sign erected has seemed to cause extreme debate around the area?

A very nice looking stone wall has been erected at the junction of Alma Street, just below the Abertillery Comprehensive School. Included in this wall is the large lettering of "Cwmtillery", is this where our valley starts? After many phone calls hoping to shine some light on things, I have found out the following. The sign has been erected lower down the valley to show the area covered by the Cwmtillery Council Wards. A larger images of the Sign/Junction can be viewed on the "Places Page"
As far as the Church goes there is no longer a parish of Cwmtillery - It merged with Abertillery and Six Bells in the late 90's to form The Parish of Abertillery, Cwmtillery & Six Bells. Over seen by one Priest and a Deacon.
