Early 1900s my sister who vouched for its authenticity gave the photograph to me. ![]() ![]() PIT LAMP GIFT FOR EX-MINER An Abertillery man one of the founder members or the south wales Miners Federation has been presented with miniature pit lamp. The gift presented at the south wales GALA at Sophia Gardens Cardiff commemorates the 75th anniversary of the miners Union in south wales. Mr John James Adams 88 of Smith Road worked at Cwmtillery Colliery for 54 years. He started when he was eleven Mr Adams then carried out coal deliveries until he was 77 a total of 66 years in the coal business. During his time as a miner Mr Adams was active in union affairs. When only 19 he became the youngest chairman of Cwmtillery Lodge. He was also lodge Secretary and Treasurer for many years. When he started in 1895 he was paid half a sovereign a week This had only risen to £2.4s.9d when he retired from the pit. Mr Adams was also one of the founder members of Abertillery miners district hospital.
