Six Bells
vs. Rogerstone
This game had to be
the crucial game of MBA league division four,
for both teams faced relegation in the face.
Rogerstone required six points to avoid
relegation Six Bells also required the same six
points again to avoid relegation.
Despite the obvious
tensions between both sides the game was played
in tremendous spirit with the lead changing
hands throughout the allotted 21 ends.
Skip Mike Harts rink
made a late comeback to run out winners by 20
shots to 14 a plus of six points and 2 league
points in the bag.
Skip Ray Taylor rink
raced away from the start leading by some ten
shots when Rogerstone started a late come back
but this fight back frizzled out at 23 19 at
twenty one ends. Another 2 league points in the
bag and a plus of 10 points overall.
Skip Tim Phelps rink
kept in touch throughout the game and needing to
keep very closely in touch with the game and
playing the shot count for overall points
awarded for a win. Final score 20 shots to 26
the Bells were now only 4 shots up for the 6
winners points
Skip Dean Webley
playing the same pecentageges had to keep close
to Rogerstone. With the game at a draw 77 points
all the pressure was on Biffos men on the final
end. Both leads launched their wood resulting in
Rogerstone holding shot and the seconds stepped
up to the mat Rogerstone's second just
consolidated the head for his skip. By this time
every player supporter were on their feet around
rink 3 willing their men on. Meanwhile back to
the game up stepped the Bells second in the form
of club Chairman Alan Jones launching his wood
at the kitty everyone held their breath has his
wood rolled up to the jack almost kissing it to
stop 5 mm behind the kitty. The Bells supporters
erupted into great cheer. Alan's bowl remained
as it was tucked up behind the kitty and proving
difficult to remove. The skip for Rogerstone was
the first to bowl and feeling the pressure
greatly, his wood did nothing to change the
head, it was now up to skip Biffo his wood also
made no difference. It looked like Alan's wood
would be our saviour. Biffo launched his second
and last wood towards the head and pulled up
slightly short but nevertheless second
shot Again the Bells supporters erupted in great
joy. With his last wood of the game the skip for
Rogerstone was now physically shaking in his
boots and pulled his last wood up short to give
the Bells losing 16 - 18 giving a shot count of
79 for 77 against. The Bells now find themselves
in an unassailable position, and will remain in
the forth division for next season. The day was
tinged with a little sadness in that Rogerstone
would remain in the relegation zone.
David
Legge Challenge Shield.
The games are
proceeding well despite the fact that Llanhilleth
bowls club have dropped out of the competition.
Despite the bad news it has been decided to
carry on with just the three teams and the
competition has received nothing but praise
filling up the end of season fixtures when teams
tend to call off games due in part to
insufficient commitment from their bowlers. Each
Club will now play four games on an home and
away basis.

Six Bells
vs. St Julians MBA League.
The Bells travelled
to Newport Gleeblans for this penultimate MBA
game needing to score maximum points to have any
hope of staying in the fourth division. With the
sun threatening to melt the tar on the roads,
the President and Secretary/reserve took their
chairs on the balcony overlooking the green.
With the Pres feeling despondent and after a few
ends had been played, We were treated to tea and
biscuits by the splendid ladies
committee. Also availing themselves, of a few
liquid refreshments from the bar.
Rink 1
Skip Dean Webley fielding one of
the stronger rinks and even after five ends
began to lose control of the game by failing to
stick to the task in hand. On the tenth end he
was 7 shots to 13 down. Picking up eight shots
to five on the next five ends at 15 to 18 down
things began to look better. Scoring only one
shot to St Julians 10 and with the president
getting even more despondent, Biffo's men added
to the overall score by picking up 4 shots on
the last end, losing 20 shots to 28 and 2 league
points down the Swanie.
Rink 3
Skip Mike Hart's men were 5 all after 5 ends and
began pulling away to lead 11 8 on the tenth.
Scoring only 3 shots over the next five ends 14
16 it looked as if another rink would fall by
the wayside. But not so, scoring 7 shots to 3 on
the remaining ends. Mike's men managed to pull
out a win 21 shots to 19. 2 league points in
the bag.
Rink 4
Skip Ray Taylor's men also had a
dodgy start on this slow paced green down 2
shots to 7 after five ends. Now the President Mr
Len Evans was really down in the dumps. Despite
encouragement from the secretary stating, it
would take at least five ends for the boys to
get into the green. Thankfully, he was proved
right and Ray was 10 9 up on the tenth. Picking
up 10 shots on the next five ends, Ray was now
leading 20 shots to 11. With some outstanding
woods from Ray and Len (Postie) Waugh and to
great cheers picked up six shots on the
remaining ends winning 26 shots to 15 another 2
league points in the bag.
Rink 5
Skip
T.Phelps men kept in touch throughout the first
fifteen ends to lead by 1 point 17 shots to 16.
At this point, the Bells were five shots up
overall for the six points given for a match
win. With Tim's men sticking to the task with
the help of some very vocal support from his
third Doug Jones (allegedly, stopping the
traffic in Maesglass tunnels) scored 6 shots to
5 on the remaining ends, giving the Bells 6
league points and 6 points for the overall win.
Now the Presidents face was a picture, and
wanting to by everyone a pint.

district game.
Congratulations to
Mike and Ray on completion of the five games in
this competition and beating Newport at Beaufort
B.C on Friday last. This despite being bitten to
death by the midges. A grand slam and well
deserved outcome, well done from all at the
Bells.
Six Bells
vs. Pontymister Welfare.
On a lovely evening
the Bells welcomed a depleted Pontymister
Welfare to the park and playing in a
friendly, a much welcomed break from league
commitments. The game was played with tremendous
camaraderie, with questions and comments on the
lovely setting of the park. Skip Mike Hart
concentrating on his bowls and the odd
question as to what is the name of the mountains
on either side of the valley and to his eternal
shame he could not answer.
Rink 1
Skip D.Webley ably supported by second Bob
Sweeting and lead Ray Hodges gave him somewhat
of an easy game leading by 10 shots to 7 on the
tenth end. Scoring 15 shots to Len Morgan's men
3 over the next eight ends, Biffos men ran out
easy winners 25 shots to 10.
Rink 2
Skip Len Waugh also had an easy game 12
shots to 2 up on the tenth end added a further 3
shots to run out winners by 15 shots to Skip
B.Eversfield's 8.
Rink 3
Skip Mike Hart had his hands full, what with all
the questions, about name of mountains and what
appeared to be the only loaded rink for
Pontymister, run out losers by 10 shots to 21.
Unfortunately I am unable to go deeper into the
game as second Alan Morgan forgot to hand in his
card rushing off for work.
Rink 4 Skip
Tim Phelps also failed to capitalise and was
trailing 2 shots at the tenth 6 shots to 8. No
further improvement took place and Tim's men run
out 9 shots to 19.
Returning to the
pavilion, it was discovered that the Bells had
won the game with the slimmest of leads 1 point.
There are no winners in friendly games, just an
honourable draw.

Six
Bells vs. Rogerstone MBA League.
Due to inclement
whether this game has been postponed.
Abercarn vs. Six Bells.
With the whether
threatening this game all day, it looked like we
were going to be done out of a chance of playing
this fixture and another possible win. But come
the hour of four pm, the rain ceased and
although overcast it looked like the game would
be on.
On a medium paced
green with the mats down, skip Tim Phelps was 6
shots to 8 down on the tenth end with both
Captains deciding
to play 18 ends. Playing with dense cloud cover,
it looked as if skip Mike Hart's men were under
the thickest of them 14 shots to 3 down on the
tenth. Captain and skip D.Webley on the other
hand, and playing with the old stalwarts, G.
Crandon, G.Evans, L.Waugh began to open up a
five shot lead at the tenth, leading 11 shots to
6. Skip Ray Taylor and his men on rink four
playing the Jones boys (Jones the Chairman &
Jones the post) opened up a good margin of 8
shots leading 10 shots to 2 on the tenth. Then
the sun broke through about twenty minutes
before it was due to set. Along with the
brightening sky's, things began to brighten up
for skip Mike Hart's men scoring ten shots on
the last few ends a draw or dare I say a win
could be on the cards. Sadly, it was not to be,
and Mike's men ran out losing by 15 shot to 17.
With Abercarn picking up 9 shots to Tim Phelps 3
on the last five also lost 10 shots to 17.
Captain Dean Webley's men picked up 10 shots on
the last three to run out winners with the
highest score 26 shots to 7 a splendid win. Skip
Ray Taylor went shotless for three ends and
dropping 5 shots on the sixteenth, kept his
head, scoring a 3 a 4 and 2 shots on the last
few ends running out winners by 19 shots to
14. Overall, with a shot count of 70 for and
55 against, the Bells won this friendly game

Six Bells
vs. Caerleon MBA League.
With the Bells
holding up the bottom of the division four
league, relegation, and with only 17 league
points to date, division 5 looked inevitable
for next season. With 16 men 2 reserves the Bells
stepped onto the green with a positive attitude
determined to go down fighting. With all four
rinks up on the eleventh end with a lead of 18
shots things began to go very quiet with the
concentration, even Doug Jones was quiet, which
is very unusual for Doug. The Bells continued to
pull away with Mike Hart having an armchair ride
with his men leading by 24 shots to 7 on the
fifteenth end. Ray Taylor's men were 15 all
until they scored four shots in the next end,
with Caerleon's men playing catch up bowls to
the last end picking up 2 shots to lose 25 - 22
the closest game of the match. Doug Jones, still
very quiet, his men despite some early jitters
from second Ray Hodges began picking up 4's and
3's to lead 21 shots to 9 by the fifteenth end
and Caerleon's men skipped by J Roberts began to
drop their heads. With Captain Biffo leading 19
shots to 11 on the eighteenth end and Mike Hart
who's men must have been on the magic dust
leading 28 shots to 8 on eighteenth end. Skip
Ray Taylor's men drawing level on the nineteenth
picked up 5 shots on the twentieth and snuffing
out any chance of Caerleon wining one rink
and the writing was on the wall for Caerleon.
With the Bells bowlers retiring to the pavilion
mentally exhausted for a well earned afternoon
tea and some liquid refreshments.
Rink 1 Lead L.Harber,
R.Hodges, L.Waugh, skip D.Jones. For
25 Against 12 +13
Rink 2 Lead D.Smith,
G.Evans, B.Paul, skip D.Webley. For
20 Against 13 +7.
Rink 3 Lead S.Smith,

32 Against
9 +23.
Rink 4 Lead D.Davies,
A.Jones(snr), J.Hillier, skip R.Taylor For
25 Against 22 +3.
With the shot count
102 for and 56 against and with the Bells
showing that they can put it all to together,
came away with maximum league points 14 almost
doubling there league points to 31 and to
increase the chance of pulling something out of
the bag on the next two games. It would be
unfair to mention individual players, on a day
when we all pulled together, but skip Mike Hart,
deserves a mention, with his men scoring one of
the highest shot counts so far this
season. Well done lads.
West
Monmouthshire B.A News.
Congratulations
to Mike and Ray representing West
Monmouthshire in the WBA inter association
game at Blackwood, with a handsome win over
Rhymney and Sirhowy the forth win out of the
five to be played. It only remains for West
Monmouthshire to beat Newport to complete
the grand slam.
Belated
congratulations to Keith Blackman on being
appointed as a selector to WMBA.
Six Bells
vs. Newbridge Friendly
Travelling to
Newbridge on a lovely warm evening to play this
friendly against long standing friends and been
pre-warned of the expected speed of the green.
Both Captains elected to play 18 ends for an
early tea and refreshments. Well the green stood
up to it's reputation catching unsuspecting
bowlers out with it's speed. The Bells were 15
shots down at the halfway stage with Tim Phelps
holding the slimmest of leads by 1 shot.
With the Bells
bowlers slowly acclimatising to the pace started
to make a game of it putting in a good
performance against a top notch side losing by
13 shots at the end.The only winning rink was
that of Tim Phelps. Results as follows.
Rink 1 Lead

Six Bells
vs. Abercarn.
Once again we
welcomed our friends from Abercarn to the park
for this friendly sunny evening game. With both
Captains electing to play 21 ends it looked as
if it was going to be a nice evening of bowls
for both sides and supporters.
Skip Tim Phelps was
9 - 3 down on the tenth end playing on rink 1.
Skip Mike Hart playing on rink 3 mimicked Tim he
also was 9 - 3 down on the tenth. Skip Dean
Webley on rink 4 was 6 shots to 15 down.
Meanwhile, on rink 5 skip Ray Taylor seeking
revenge for previous defeats was 11 shots to 7
up.
Skip Tim Phelps was
unlucky scoring eight shots on the last four
ends but left it to late and ran out 19 shots to
R.Winston's 24 five shots adrift.
Skip Mike Hart
despite scoring five shots on the last four
ends, sadly, suffered an innings defeat losing
11 shots to J.Beecham's 20 nine shots adrift.
Skip Dean Webley
never had a look in and despite pulling out what
little hair he has, lost to K.Hunt's boys 16
shots to 28 heaviest lose of the evening by
twelve shots.
Hooray for Ray
Taylor's men, sticking to the task at hand,
dropping only four shots on the last eleven ends
to run out well satisfied 28 shot to L Morgan's
13 a well earned fifteen shots to the good.
Final Scores.

Six Bells
vs. Girlings M.B.A League.
With things getting
a little worrying league wise, the Bells
travelled over to Pontypool to Girlings for this
crucial M.B.A game. Travelling with the bare
sixteen players plus the President a feeling of
foreboding set into the side. Playing on a green
that was slow and heavy the Bells started,
taking at least five ends to get to grips with
the green. Skip Tim Phelps on rink 1 leading by
the slimmest of a 2 shot lead had his brother
(the Blues Brothers) back from his holls in the
form of Dough Jones always up for the game Dough
encouraged Tim's boys throughout the game.
Listening from the side, you would have thought
he was skip.
Skip Mike Hart's men
struggled with the green for the first seven
ends and all looked black for them.
Surprisingly, the game started to turn for
Mike,Mike's men on the fifteenth trailing by
four shoots to R.Jenkins men 11 shots to 14.
Turning the screw even tighter Mike's men began
the come back by leading 17 shots to 14 on the
eighteenth end only to drop four shots on the
next. With all the bowlers watching from the
terraces, pressure began to mount and drawing 18
shots all on the penultimate end it only needed
the Bells to keep their heads and a steady hand.
Holding one shot on the last end, only to see
Robby Jenkins who bowled like a demon all game,
take the shot away with his first wood. Mike in
a quandary at this point, whether to draw a shot
to win the rink, or try to make the four shots
to win the game overall. On examining the head
he realised he had no chance of making the four
shots and wisely, tried for the shot and 2
points. Despite a valiant effort this was not to
be. With Robby deciding not to use his last wood
took the one shot to win 19 shots to 18. Mike's
men left the green having had a great afternoon
of competition bowls, a little downhearted that
they had not won the game for Mike.
Skip Dean Webley's
men on the other hand lead 14 shots to 4 on the
tenth end with no real threat from J.Baulches
men and the first rink off the green and running
out 20 shots to 15 plus five and 2 league points
in the bag.
Skip Len Waugh's
boys also struggled throughout the game down 5
shots to 20 on the tenth end. Tea time with Lens
boys needing to close the gap giving the other
rinks a chance of pulling off a match winner.
Scoring nine shots on the last eleven ends
dropped a four on the twentieth end to go out
losers 14 to P Watkins 29.

Six Bells
vs. Bedwellty Park.
The Bells travelled
to Tredegar for this long standing friendly
match. If I can digress for a moment, some 24
years ago and having tried my hand on the green
having a few roll up's with the old lignum
woods. I was asked by Bert Snelgrove to put on a
pair of trainers and accompany them to Bedwellty
Park for a game of bowls as the Bells were one
man short and if I did not play, they would be
one rink short. Any road up, as terrified as I
was, I played on rink one with Bert giving me
advice and dropping a leaf on the green, to
indicate the amount of green to take. I can't
for the life of me, remember how we got on only
to suffice to say, that on that day and on rink
one we had one of the oldest bowlers in Bert and
a young lad of the tender age of thirteen.
On a lovely warm but
cloudy afternoon, the game started with skips
allocating the rinks imaging my surprise, when
learning that I would be playing second to skip
and captain D.Webley and on rink one. The green
bowled well quite pacey despite being told that
we were in fact playing off rink. Dean's men
started dropping 2 shots on the first and
drawing 4 shots all on the fifth. On the
eleventh end the Bells were 13 shots to 11 up
and was then informed, that opposition skip Ron
Price had not lost a game all season. This was
like a red rag to the fantastic four, they began
to draw shots on both hands and with all four
playing for their lives, picking up 8 shots up
to the sixteenth end leading 21 shots to 12.
Dropping 2 shots over the next 2 ends it only
needed the Bells to keep their heads score shots
or keep Bedwellty down to 1 shot on the
remaining ends. Picking up a further one shot on
end 19 the Bells were still leading 22 shots to
15 and were on to a cert. Bedwellty scored 1
shot on the final end losing the game and along
with Ron's record 22 shots to 16.
Rink 2 skip Ray
Taylor men became stuck on 4 shots to 14 on the
ninth end and looked doomed, Picking up 5 shots
by the eleventh things started to look
reasonable for Tinker 9 - 14 down. 16 - 20 down
on the eighteenth end it only needed five shots
to win the game. Sadly, and scoring only 2 shots
on the last three ends the come back was snuffed
out like a candle for Tinkers men, unlucky to
lose by 18 shot to 21.
On rink 3 skipped by
Len Waugh the wheels must have come off losing 6
- 26 on the eighteenth, end to J.Edwards men.
With Len's men scoring only one point over the
next three ends, gave Bedwellty the highest
score of the day winning 33 shots to 7.
Whatever went on on
rink 3, must have been catching, with new skip
on the block Les Harber's men struggling to keep
up with Bedwellty skip G.Hooper. Even with the
two "Jones" the bowls playing, Bedwellty were 23
shots to 7 up on the fifteenth. With Bedwellty
picking up a further 6 shots on the next six
ends and the Bells picking up 4 to lose 29 shots
to 11 with Les Harber's and on his first game as
skip, had his score card marked, "Must do better
next time".
Still, a most
enjoyable tea and afternoon of bowls, hope you
enjoyed the little anecdote.

Next Wednesday see the Bells at home to friends
from Abercarn in
a friendly.
Abertillery vs. Six Bells,
The Bells
travelled all of one mile for this final
scheduled game in the WMBA league. The green
was in great condition and bowled somewhere
around medium to fast pace. Accompanied by
music in the park, the game began, skip Mike
Hart's men picked up one shot on the first
end and it looked like it was going to be a
good game with woods drawing in on both
hands. Mike had to contend with some of his
players playing out of position what with R.
Hodges playing lead K. Rogers playing third
and L. Waugh (Posty) playing second, despite
the strange set up, Mike had no need to
worry, as all three started to gather shots
at a steady pace up to the tenth end leading
7 shots to 6. With opposition skip Richard
Cook, having a plethora of wicks, preventing
the Bells picking up more shots than the
score line indicated. All square at the
thirteenth end. On the fourteenth and
fifteenth end Aber picked up two shots to
lead 10 shots to 8 and things were looking
black for Mike's men when, they pulled out
five shots on the final three ends to run
out winners by 14 shot 10 demonstrating how
close the game had been.
Captain Dean's
men really struggled up to the tenth end
losing 5 shots to 10 until his men began to
fight back on the eleventh end with 3 shots
and scoring 7 shots over the next 2 ends to
go 15 shots to 12 up. With the lead changing
hands on several occasions Biffo's men went
into the lead on the penultimate end 18
shots to 17 only needing to draw shot for a
win or a close second for a draw sadly, he
dropped 3 shots on the last losing 18 shots
to 20.
Skip Tim Phelps
and his men took the first five ends to lead
by 6 shots to zero on rink 4 then preceded
to score only one shot over the next five
ends. All square on the tenth, again, Tim's
men scored a four shot count on the
thirteenth with Aber taking the other four
ends and leading 17 shots to 11 on the
fifteenth. The game continued to see saw
back and forth for the final three ends with
both skips picking up 4 shots and so it was
another win for Aber 15 shots to 21.
Skip Keith
Blackman on the other hand must have stepped
on a spider or something leading 9 shots to
6 on the tenth end and scoring 5 shots over
the next five ends to lead 14 shots to 11 on
the fifteenth. Failing to keep up the
momentum over the next three ends , Aber
scored 5 shots to 1 over the last three ends
to leave Keith's men bitterly disappointed
losing by 1 shot 15 shots to 16.
With Abertillery
taking 12 of the 14 league points on offer
and with a shot count of 62 for and 67
against another close game. With only one
game in the WMBA league left to play against
RTB's cancelled due to weather conditions,
neither side had changed their league
positions with the Bells mid point and Aber
at the bottom.

Six Bells
vs. Pontymister Welfare MBA
On another rain
sodden day, the players took to the green in
this crunch game against Pontymister. Despite
the rain, the spirit of the Bells players was as
high as the threatening clouds, a spirit that
has not been seen for a while. This game was one
of the most entertaining game the President and
myself have watched this season. Biffo's men
were on the back foot from the start but stuck
to the task being 7 shots to 9 down on the tenth
end. Lead Selwyn Smith and despite bowling two
wrong bias woods had a tremendous game and
getting engrossed in the game forgetting to
check his bias before launching his woods. Not
to worry, pints all round Selwyn. New bowler
A.Morgan was thrown in at the deep end in this
his baptism of fire and experiencing the
pressure of playing a top flight team. Sadly,
and despite some good bowls from lead Selwyn and
third Bary the game turned into a route for
Biffo,Biffo's men losing 9 shots to 25. M.Harts
rink trailing 6 shots to 9 on the tenth and
D.Davies, G.Evans, D.Price firing on all
cylinders managed to pick up three shot on the
eleventh end and four shots on the thirteenth to
go 13 all on the fifteenth. Then, picking up a
further two shots on the sixteenth and five on
the seventeenth to go 20 shots to 13 on this
end, it looked like Mike's men were home and dry
and on the road to a much deserved win. On the
final end and with the Bells holding 22 - 18.
Mike's men had only to hold shot or a close
second to win Unfortunately, and with
Pontymister holding shot, the close second wood
was removed from the head, but no panic, Mike
still had two seconds in the head, only for skip
S.Lewis and on his last wood, bowled a pearl of
a shot and removed these two woods to score 4
shots and draw the game 22 - 22.
On new skip on the
block L.Waugh's rink, his men also stuck to the
task and were only 2 shots down at the tenth and
playing well. Lens men could only score a
further 2 shoots over the next six ends, falling
behind on every end. Despite a late rally
scoring 4 shoot on the last two ends, went down
13 - 19 and must have been disappointed that but
for just a few more shots, what might have been.
On paper, Bary Line
had the best rink of the day, in Alan Jones (jun)
lead Dave Smith second, J.Hillier third. against
John Slade's men. 11 - 8 up at the tenth end, it
look as if things were ticking over nicely for
Bary. But, picking up only 3 shots over the next
nine ends lost the game despite a score of four
shots on the 19th and 20th ends to lose 18 shots
to 27.
With tremendous
support from both sets of supporters, cheering
on both teams, it turned out to be a thoroughly
entertaining afternoon with the game of
bowls and Pontymister emerging the winners.

Six Bells
vs. Brynmawr WMBA
In this local derby
WMBA game, Brynmawr came down to the park on a
beautiful sunny evening. With the rinks of skip
Tim Phelps drawing on the tenth end 11 shots all
against L Elias's rink and Dean Webley's men
holding a lead of 14 shots to 7 against
D.Mogford's men it looked as if the Bells may
pull a few league points out of the bag. The
rinks of Mike Hart and B Lines were a
180 degree turn around in comparison, with Mike
5 shots down on the tenth and Bary 2 shots down
8 10. Maybe, they would catch up over the next
eight ends. Sadly, it was not to be, with skip
Owen Dando (Welsh Under 25 International) team
started to pull away from Bary's men to run out
winners by 14 shots 25. Tim's men on the other
hand, failed to capitalise and went down by five
shots 15 - 20. If it was any consolation, the
lowest losing rink of the game. Mike's men were
blasted out of the water by A.Williams and his
men, picking up 8 shots on the thirteenth,
fourteenth and fifteenth ends to win by 9 shots
12 - 21.
Captain Biffo's men
stayed in touch up to the fourteenth end when
D.Mogfords men picked up 4 shots to go into the
lead by 1 shot 16 - 17 . With Brynmawr scoring a
further 4 shots on the sixteenth end, saw
Biffo's men lose by 6 shoots 17 - 23. So no
points were gained from this encounter, with
Brynmawr taking all 14 points on offer.

14th July 2007 Standard Home MBA
Skip M.Hart on rink
one managed to keep in touch up to the tenth
end 8 - 9 one shot down and drawing 11 all on
the thirteenth. Mike's men then dropped four
shots on the fifteenth end 12 shots to 15 down.
Standard then scored three shoots on the
sixteenth making a win look doubtful, at 18 12
up. Scoring only four shots to Standards seven
on the next five ends, Standard ran out winners
by six shots 16 - 22 .
Doug Jones men had a
torrid time on rink two, aptly named, "The
Graveyard" with woods for both sides, point
blank, refusing to draw on forehand or backhand.
On the fifteenth end the Bells were down 18
shots to 4 and staring defeat in the
face. Adding only three more shots, a
disappointed Bells walked to the changing room
having lost 28 shots to 7.
Rink three Biffo's
men on the other hand kept plugging away adding
shots to the count and at 18 ends at 21 16 look
as if the game was in the bag. Unfortunately,
lady luck smiled on K.Skidmore's four for
Standard, and they picked up six shots on the
last three ends to pip Biffo's men by 23 21.
Saviour of the day
skip B Line and his men, played a steady game
for all of the twenty one ends, keeping in front
of Standard throughout the game. Nevertheless,
Standard never gave in and produced a scare on
the nineteenth end, drawing 2 shots to bring the
score to 19 - 18. Bary's men held their nerve
over the last two ends scoring a further three
shots to eventually run out winners by four
shots and a much needed two league points.

chance of staying up.

contested game in the WMBA league.
11th July 2007 Ebbw Vale Welfare Away
W. Mon
The Bells travelled
to Ebbw Vale Welfare for this W.M.B.A league
game on what turned out to be a lovely evening
for both bowlers and spectators. Before play
commenced Six Bells bowlers were each presented
with pens in this Ebbw Vale Welfare's centenary
year. Ray Taylors boys hade a slow start and
were four shots down on the tenth end, at 6
shots to 10. Ray's boys then picked up ten shots
on the next five ends and with the slimiest of
leads 16 to 14 up failed to score again until
the penultimate end and picking up two more
shots to run out winners 18 to 16 shots and two
league points in the bag.
Doug Jones on the
other hand, started well being 11 shots to 6 up
on the tenth end. Over the next three ends
things fell apart somewhat, being 11 all on the
13th end, but despite the unlucky 13, Doug's
boys stuck to the task picking up three shots on
the fourteenth and fifteenth end, gaining the
narrowest of leads 14 shots to 11 only to
drop four shots on the sixteenth and seventeenth
end and all looked black at 14 to 15 shots one
shot down. Then the Bells scored 2 shots on the
last end to give Doug his well deserved win by
the margin of one point 16 shots to 15 and
another 2 league points.
New kid on the
block, skip Len Waugh, found himself in charge
of a rink that was leading 8 shots to 1 by the
third end, but despite this Len's men were one
shot down by the tenth. With the lead changing
hands on the sixteenth end, with a five
shot count from the Welfare bringing the score
to 18 shots to 19. With the intervention of a
messy bird, leaving a deposit upon third
K.Blackman's white cap. The Bells luck changed
and took the last two ends with one shoot on
each, to run out winners 20 shots to 19 and
another 2 league points.
Captain Dean Webley,
despite some last minute changes to his squad,
came out of the blocks scoring 6 shots to 4 on
the fifth end, only to lose the lead at the
tenth end 9 shots to 10. With both teams scoring
shots, the lead changed hands on several
occasions up to the sixteenth end when, the
Welfare held the lead, with one shot 14 to 15.
On the last end, lead for Welfare, (N.Prosser)
bowled his second wood up to the jack and
Biffo's men tried unsuccessfully, to remove the
shot, but to no avail. With Captain Dean's first
attempt to dislodge the wood with a drive was
implored by his third, (A.R.Jones) to just draw
a close second and maintain the overall winning
score for the Bells who were now four shots up
overall. It was all that Biffo could do to
resist from having a second drive at the wood,
but wisely, drew a very close second wood,
possibly losing the chance of a win, but gave
the Bells an overall win by three shots. Final
score 15 shots to 16,
Rink 3 Lead

With Six Bells

league for this season.

beating Ebbw Vale Welfare's pair.
7th July 2007 Cwm Home MBA
It stopped raining
at last and this game took place in glorious
sunshine and looked as if sun tan lotion would
be the order of the day. The Bells elected to
play to the tennis court end for this game and
for the first time this season. Playing this
way, means a very tight backhand and a wide
forehand, despite this, the green played well,
with virtually, no ruts or bumps. Mike Hart's
men were on the rack against D.Williams on rink
1 being 5 shots to 12 down on the tenth end.
With his men struggling through to the end of
the game losing 21 to 10. Dean Webley's men
faired a little better on rink 3 with the
narrowest of leads 9 shots to 8 against
D.Badcocks men on the eleventh end. With the
match lead changing hands up to the fifteenth
end, Cwm started pulling away 15 shots to 11
this continued up to the final end 15 shots to
20 with Cwm holding shot. Again, Biffo produced
another peach of a shot, lifting the jack back
to his men's three back woods, only to push the
kitty six inches to far which brought in Cwm's
back wood, resulting in a wining 21 shots to 15
for Cwm. Bary Line's men again kept in touch,
with the lead changing hands on the tenth end 9
shots 7. Needing to keep the score board turning
over, Bary's men were 16 - 15 up going into the
last end, only to drop 2 shots and lost 16 shots
to 17. Ray Tailors rink despite a shaky start
for the first two ends, never looked back and
began to pile on the points from the sixth
end. On the eighteenth end Ray's men had pulled
away 17 shots to 13 it looked as if Ray's rink
would be the only winning rink today, eventual,
and with a five shots count on the last end, run
out winners by 26 shots to 14 and 2 league
points in the bag.
Rink 1 Lead A.Morgan,
G.Crandon, D.Jones, skip M. Hart. For 10
Against 21 -11.
Rink 3 Lead A.Jones,
R.Hodges, B.Paul, skip D.Webley. For 15

Rink 4 Lead S.Smith,

Line. For 16 Against 17 -1
Rink 5 Lead D.Davies,
K.Blackman, L.Waugh, skip R.Taylor For 26
against 14 +12
With a total of 67
shots for and 73 against -6 the Bells could
considered themselves unlucky, not to have
picked up more points than they did.
Next Wednesday Six
Bells travel to Ebbw Vale Welfare for its next
WMBA league game.
Congratulations to Mike Hart and Ray
Taylor representing their club in the West
Monmouthshire B.A vs. South Monmouthshire B.A inter
district game at Pontymister Avenue on Friday,
6th July. Winning on five out of the six rinks
played. West Monmouthshire have now won three
out of the five games, in this WBA competition.
4th July 2007 Cwm Home W. Mon
With no change in
the weather conditions the Bells entertained
local friends Cwm to the green in this WMBA
league game and as usual, for the last few
weeks, in the pouring rain. With players asking
when will it stop?. Skip Dean.Webley's men had a
close tussle with Dave Williams men being twelve
shots all on the tenth end. Meanwhile, on rink
2 skip Ray Taylor's men were struggling against
J. Price and were 13 shots to five down at the
tenth end. Doug Jones men out on rink 3 were
keeping the score board ticking over and having
a score of nine to six at the tenth end. Skip
Bary Line and his men kept in touch seven shots
to twelve at the tenth end.
With the weather
getting worse neither side wanted to be on the
green, but to their credit, both sides stuck to
the game in hand. Dean Webley's men continued a
see saw game to end up eighteen shots all at the
seventeenth end and with Cwm holding shot, it al
looked as if the Biffo's men would lose by one
shot. When, and on the last end, and with the
final bowl of the game, skip Dean produced a
peal of a shot, passing the other fifteen woods
in the head, to produce a rink winning
shot winning 19 points to 18 and 2 league
points.
With two league
points now in the bag. It was now up to the
remaining three rinks to pull out the stops.
Sadly, Ray Taylor's men ran out 11 shots to 23
down against J.Price. Doug Jones has a narrow
miss at 16 shots to 18 against
J.Williams. B.Line was the only realistic chance
now remaining, and with the score being 17 all
on the penultimate end, only to drop two shots
to go down 14 shots to 17 against D.Babcock's
men.
Rink 1 Lead
A.Morgan, B.Sweeting, L.Waugh, skip D.Webley.
For 19 Against 18 +1
Rink 2 Lead
D.Smith, D.Tugwell, K.Blackman, skip R.Taylor. For
11 Against 23 -12.
Rink 3 Lead

16 Against 18 -2.
Rink 4 Lead
S.Smith, R.Richards, J.Hillier, skip B.Line.
For 14 Against 17 -3
With a total of 60
shots for and 76 Cwm ran out worthy winners
gaining 12 league point to the Bells 2.
Players worthy of
mention Captain Dean Webley for his amazing rink
winning shot and Derek Tugwell for his
performance under the wings of Ray Taylor. Six
Bells again entertain Cwm at home on Saturday in
the MBA League.
30th June 2007 Crickhowell Away
MBA
Most of the Bells
players, on meeting at the clubhouse, could not
believe this game was still on, what with the
rain pouring down. The Bells arrived at
Crickhowell only to be preceded by a cloudburst
with the streets awash with rainwater. The game
started with both captains agreeing to play
eighteen ends due to the weather conditions. Tim
Phelps men came out of the starting
blocks picking up 10 shots to 1 on the first
five ends. Ray Taylor's men took a little longer
to start against Phil Reeds men, nevertheless,
by the eleventh end Ray's men were 9 7 up. Mike
Harts men were only 8 10 down on the tenth end.
Bary Line's men were up against it from the
start being 7 17 down on the eleventh.
Tim Phelps's win was
never in doubt running out winners by 19 shots
to 14 and 2 league points already in the bag.
Bary Line's men began a late rally due in part
to Selwyn Smith's (the bus driver) accurate
bowling at lead and needing to score shots to
keep us in contention. Skip
Ray Taylor's men now completing the eighteenth
end and running out 19 shots to 13 another 2
league points in the bag. With club president
Len Evans and secretary Ray Hodges frantically
doing the maths discovered that the Bells were 1
shot up over all and needed the 2 rinks still
playing to keep the score board turning over.
Bary Line's men were the next rink to finish and
pulling back 19 shots to 23. It was left to a
well sodden rink of skip Mike Hart to pull out
something special needing 3 shots for a draw and
would it be possible?, 4 for a win. This would
be an Herculean task and virtually impossible.
Sadly, Mike's men dropped 1 shot on the last end
giving Crickhowell a win by 4 shots and 10
league points.
Rink 1 Lead R.Taylor,
K.Blackman, A.R.Jones, skip R.Taylor. For
19 Against 13 +6.
Rink 2 Lead B.Paul,
K.Davies, D.Webley, skip M.Hart For
10 Against 21 -11.
Rink 3 Lead S.Smith,
L.Waugh, J.Hillier, skip B.Line.
For 19 Against 23 -4.
Rink 4 Lead K.Rogers,
D.Tugwell, D.Jones, skip T.Phelps. For
19 Against 14 +5
Considering that
this game should never have been played in these
conditions. Congratulations to both sides for an
entertaining, nail biting afternoon of
bowls. The Bells went in for tea, considering
themselves unlucky not to have pulled of a win.
Crickhowell 10 league point Six Bells 4.
27th June 2007 Nant-y-glo Away
W.Mon
On yet another wet
and rainy evening the Bells travelled to Nant-y-glo
for this WMBA mid week match. The sun came out
and so did the midges. The game started well
for skip Dean Webley leading 13 shots to 5 on
the ninth end. Skip Doug Jones rink were in
contention with 8 shots to 11 in this ding dong
game with the lead changing end after end. Skip
Mike Hart's rink trailing 4 shots to 10 and all
to play for. Skip Tim Phelps rink 5 shots to 12
down. Over the next few ends the water began to
come up through the green making it more like a
skating rink than a bowling green. With the
green becoming increasingly more slippery, this
was not the only thing slipping, as the Bells
began to lose control of the game. By the last
end all rinks for the Bells were well down and
the only consolation for the Bells was that it
stayed fine and the game had been played in
great spirit.
Rink 1 Lead K.Rogers,
R.Hodges, K.Davies, skip D.Jones. For
10 Against 23. -13.
Rink 2 Lead A.Jones,

Rink 4 Lead D.Davies,

With this valuable
lesson in bowling and a shot count of 42 for 87
against -45 and all 14 point going to Nant-y-glo, both
teams retired to the clubhouse for tea and
sandwiches.
23rd June 2007 Newbridge Friendly.
Six Bells
entertained long standing friends of Newbridge
BC on a warm and sunny afternoon, a welcome
change from all the rain of the past
week. Fielding five rinks against this top class
division two side. The game started well, with
all five rinks staying in contention at the
eleventh end. Ray Taylor's rink 9 shots to 14
down, Mike Harts 6 shots to 12 down, Dai Davies
rink 5 shots to 12 down, Doug Jones rink 8 shots
to 10 down, Dean Webley rink drawing 9 shots
all. With Dai Davies playing skip for the first
time this season Dave Smith playing third Les
Harber playing third it was a day of
experimentation for captain Dean Webley. The
remaining ends saw the playing skills of the
Newbridge players starting to take control of
the game, with all but Dean Webley's rink
managing to stay within striking distance.
Despite losing on
all but one rink, the game was played in a
tremendous spirit with Newbridge captain Malcolm
Jones keeping both sides on rink 1 entertained
all afternoon. Rink 1 also saw man of the match,
Keith Blackman play one of his best games so far
this season.

18th June 2007 Nant-y-Glo
in the Blaenau Gwent Cup Knockout Competition.
On a day when it
rained constantly, both Six Bells and Nant-y-glo
could only hope that the whether forecast would
prove correct. Forecasting that the rain would
stop, clouds would disperse and it would turn
into a splendid evening at 4 pm. At 4pm it did
exactly as it had been forecast, and play
started on this first round of the Blaenau Gwent
Cup.
Rink 1
Lead D.Smith, G.Crandon, L.Harber skip
R.Taylor's men were on the rack from the start
and were thirteen shots to one down on the
seventh end. On the eighth end a mini revival
for the Bells started, scoring six shots on the
next four ends, only to slip back on the twelfth
end to seven shots to fifteen down. Nant-y-glo
over the remaining ends scored nine shots to run
out winners by 24 shot to 11 -13.
Rink 2
Lead A.Jones (snr), K.Rogers, D.Jones, skip
T.Phelps men started to pick up the shots from
the third end and scored shots at a steady pace
until the seventh end being 9 shots up to
Nant-y-glo's 2. It was then that Nant-y-glo
started to come into the game and by the
fifteenth end, it was twelve shots all. The
Bells then scored a further four shots to
Nant-y-glo's one to run out winners by three
shots. For 16 against 13 +3.
Rink 3
Lead D.Davies, L.Legg, K.Blackman, skip M. Hart
scoring four shots up to the third end,
then failed to score any further shots until the
twelfth end, falling behind by four shots to
seventeen. Despite this margin of thirteen
shots. Mike's men also began to fight back,
picking eight shots out of four of the last six
ends. Unfortunately, the damage had been done
and Nant-y-glo scored a further two shots out of
the six remaining ends to run out by 19 shots to
12 -7.
Rink 4
Lead S.Smith, R.Hodges, A.R.Jones, skip D.Webley
(biffo) this was the first game for quite a
while, that the combination of lead Selwyn Smith
and second Ray Hodges took to the green. Always
enjoying friendly banter with the opposition
lead Ray Stephens and Malcolm Jones the game
first went to the Bells and then to Nant-y-glo
and then, back to the Bells. This continued
until the sixth end when the Bells started to
pull away leading thirteen shots to eight on the
tenth end. Nant-y-glo then made a comeback on
the next three ends to draw thirteen all on the
thirteenth end. With a foreboding score board
reading 13 13 13. Some great play by the Bells
skip Biffo and that of Nant-y-glo's, in the form
of Goff Long, made the tussle even more
exciting. The Bells scored three more shots over
the next four ends leading 17 shots to 13. Then
both skips, on hearing that the game had already
been won by Nant-y-glo and by thirteen shots to
this end. Then decided, that it was pointless
playing the last end and drew stumps.
Final scores Six
Bells 56 shots. Nant-y-glo 69 -13. Best wishes
to Nant-y-glo in the next round.
16th June 2007 Garndiffaith Away
Friendly
Six Bells travelled
over the mountain to play Garndiffaith in this
friendly match, a welcome change from
competitive matches over the last few weeks.
Friendly fixtures with Garndiffaith have been a
feature of our fixtures list over the last few
years. Although the weather outlook, looked
very black indeed for this fixture with the
Garn who elected to play eighteen ends as
opposed to twenty one in an effort to beat the
rain.
With all rinks
starting well on a medium paced green the game
continued for about four end when out came the
sun. At the halfway stage, with the exception of
skip Mike Harts, all three rink were up and the
Bells had the slimmest of leads 37 shots to 29.
On the fifteenth end
all went black and down came the rain, albeit
for ten minutes or so, then the game was played
to its conclusion.
Six Bells took
advantage of this game, and played, players in
new positions, namely, Les Harber at third, Des
Price at skip, Alan Jones (Jun), at skip
Rink 1 Lead A.Jones,
K,Rogers, L.Waugh, skip D.Price. For 20
shots Against 9 +11.
Rink 2 Lead A.Morgan,
R.Hodges, L.Harber, skip M.Hart. For 14
shots Against 18 -4.
Rink 3 Lead S.Smith,
G.Evans, B.Paul, skip Dean Webley. For 17
shots Against 16 +1.
Rink 4 Lead L.Legg,
K.Davies, K.Blackman, skip A.R.Jones For 17
shots Against 13 +4.
Although the points
were irrelevant, nevertheless, it was nice to
come away with a win 68 shots to Garn 56 points
difference of 12 shots.
