Congratulations |
|
Congratulations from all
the players and committee to No.8 Richard Harris who has been called up into
the Welsh District training squad next month.
|
| December 2003 |
|
On Saturday, powerful No.8 Richard Harris, became the
first Cwmtillery Saracens player to make his Gwent District debut against
Swansea District in the Howells District Cup and helped the District in
proceeding into the next round with a try on his debut. This game followed a
promising performance by Richard when playing for the Welsh Presidents side
last week also scoring a try in that game too.

Cwmtillery Saracens have now set up a partnership between
ourselves / Dragons trust and Abertillery Comprehensive school to go in and
coach the children and hopefully get rugby back playing in the school. We had
initially started off with the Year 7 pupils but due to its success have now
added the Year 8 pupils to the scheme. We currently have a player base of
around 30 children training afterschool on a Wednesday for 1 hour. We are
hoping our first game for Year 7's will be in about 3 weeks time. Already
arranged is a training session this week with the current Gwent Dragons
Regional side and also this month Michael Owen (Wales / Gwent Dragons) will be
holding a Coca Cola sponsored skills session. The reason we set this up was
to try and promote rugby back into the town from grass root level and hopefully
this will have a knock on effort with more kids joining the already successful
Abertillery RFC mini-section

Attendances at the Abertillery Comprehensive School training
sessions are being well attended and the club is now looking to incorporate the
Year 8 pupils into the system. The sessions are being held on a Wednesday
afternoon after school and all new pupils are welcome.

Off the field, Cwmtillery have started to make links with
Abertillery Comprehensive school by holding coaching sessions after school with
the hope of getting rugby played there on a regular basis. The first session
was held last week with the Year 7 children and was well attended by 18
enthusiastic kids. The sessions will take place now every Wednesday after
school and all children are welcome to turn up and lets hope we can get rugby
played back into the town the level it was a few years ago
