| Cyrus Davies Cup Cwmtillery 21 Cefn Forest 15 | |
| This week
Cwmtillery entertained Division 1 side, Cefn Forest in the Cyrus Davies
District Cup and progressed through a well earned 21 - 15 victory. This manly
due to the hardworking forwards who faced up to the tough Cefn forwards and
came out on top but also down to the Cwmtillery points machine Mark
Williams. Williams, playing at outside half due to injuries, opened the scoring when scrumhalf Mark Staley drew the defense to put Williams into a gap and juggled the ball over the line only to regather it and score under the posts, which he also converted. Cefn Forest response was immediate and they forwards picked up the intensity and worked the ball wide to score an unconverted try in the corner (7-5). With the prize of a place in the next round of the cup at stake, indiscipline started to creep into both sides game, and Cwmtillery were first to capitalize on this with a well taken penalty from Williams (10 - 5) and with both sides then reduced to 14 players due to yellow cards, Cefn struck again with another unconverted try out wide to take the sides in at halftime all square at 10 -10. In the second half Cwmtillery were first to register a score, when Williams put in a long cross field kick which the Cefn defense failed to gather to allow ever present flanker, Sean Bull to pounce on which went unconverted (15-10), and Williams made up for this miss with another well taken penalty inside the 22 to stretch the Cwmtillery lead (18-10). The Cefn pack then came at the home side with all guns blaring and scored another try out wide to take them to within one score (18-15). With 20min left of the game, Cefn were reduced to 13 players for 10min for fighting but Cwmtillery failed to capitalize on this advantage and relied on Williams again with time running out who looked to run the ball, only to slot over a sweetly taken drop goal whilst on the move to take the home side six points clear (21-15). The home side stuck to their task in the last 5mins as Cefn threw everything at them and looked as though they would gain the try they needed in the last minute only for hooker, Lewis Elliot to snatch a strike against the head on his own line and allow his side to clear the line for the end of the match and progress into the next round. |
