| After a poor
start to the year, Cwmtillery returned to winning ways with a thoroughly
deserved win against Division 1 side Hafodrynys, to progress into the
semi-finals for a second successive year. Cwmtillery started with a bang and was unlucky not to open the scoring as early as the first minute but some strong defense by the home side managed to keep them out. The Hafod's big pack dominated the set pieces in the first half but it was Cwmtillery who were first to score when No.8 Richard Harris broke from a scrum on the half way and raced away up field, with only the full back to beat he put a grubber kick in over the line and flanker Ian Padfield touched down under the posts and Mark Williams converted (0 -7). Hafod's forwards continued to dominate and from a lineout close to the Cwmtillery line they caught and drove over to score an unconverted try in the corner (5-7) and went into the lead when Cwmtillery failed to deal with a high kick and Hafod capatalised on the confusion behind the visitors line to pounce for another unconverted try and go into the second half with a 10-7 lead. With Hafod now playing with the elements Cwmtillery had to raise their game and responded well with the whole squad playing their role especially young second row, Mark Williams, who put in a mature performance securing vital ball in key areas. With both side's defences very strong it relied upon the boot of Williams to slot over two penalties to take Cwmtillery into a hard fought lead (10-13). Deep into injury time Hafod was awarded a penalty on the Cwmtillery line and decided to run the ball, but the Cwmtillery side stood strong in defense but they needed a certain try saving tackle by winger Liam Beattie in the corner to save the day and progress into the semi-finals. Both sides can take credit from the game, which was hard fought and thoroughly entertaining from start to finish on a very heavy pitch. Also credit must go towards the referee who had an excellent game and allowed both sides to play rugby. |
